3 Ways to Keep Your Home Tidy So You Feel More Relaxed

Aside from being unsightly, a cluttered, dirty home can be destructive to your physical and mental health and lifestyle in many ways. For starters, it causes depression and anxiety, which can promote a poor diet and overeating. Relationships can become compromised, your kids won’t be able to concentrate on their schoolwork, you won’t be able to focus on household duties and bills, and you may become more introverted.

Not being able to find anything puts you at risk of becoming late for work, which in turn could lead to poor job performance. One study even found hoarding led to an average of seven absences per month. Not to mention, lack of cleanliness is a health hazard, as someone could trip and fall, allergies are more likely, and a dirty kitchen can cause salmonella. The good news is that once it’s under control, maintaining tidiness is easier than ever. Here’s how to get on track so that you can feel more relaxed, productive, and healthy in your home.

Before Anything, You’ve Got to Declutter

You can’t clean a home when there’s clutter in the way, so purging should be the first thing on your list. In order to know what you need or don’t need, you’ve got to do a purge. One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they can do this in an entire day. Don’t put that amount of pressure on yourself or you’re liable to give up and not complete the job. Instead, dedicate two to three hours on a space or project — but don’t move on to something different until it’s 100 percent completed.

Designate which items you’re keeping and which you’re giving away or donating. If you must, make a “maybe” pile, but make an effort to commit one way or the other so you feel you’re making progress. It’s likely that you’ll also have a trash pile for things like dated toiletries and broken/unusable items. Don’t purchase any new storage containers or systems until you’ve completed this process in your entire home — you really won’t know what you need until then.

Get a Pro to Clean Your House

Once the clutter is cleared, it’s time for a top-to-bottom cleaning. In an effort to give you a completely fresh start, have your home deep cleaned by a professional. Nationally, the average cost to hire maid service is $157. Along with saving you time, it’s advantageous to hire a pro because they have a higher grade of equipment and supplies, and they’re armed with the expertise to clean stubborn places like baseboards, walls, fans, and blinds, as well as sticky stoves/ovens, crusty bathroom tiles, and grungy refrigerators. If you can swing it financially, even having an expert come once a month can make it easier for you to maintain their efforts.

Make Tidying Up a Daily Habit

The best way to keep things from getting out of control is to make tidiness a daily habit. For example, make your bed every morning, do one load of laundry each day, do a nightly “sweep” and put everything out in its place, keep basic cleaning supplies within reach (especially in kitchen and bathroom) and wipe down surfaces regularly, and clean as you go — from working to playtime to eating to bathing. If you’re living with a spouse, partner, or have a family, make sure you’re getting them on board to help lighten your load.

While a clean and de-cluttered home naturally promotes relaxation, up the ante by adding some fresh cut flowers, candles, and aromatherapy. Installing dimmer switches on some of your lighting fixtures can allow you to create varied levels of ambiance. Invest in good sheets and pillows to ensure you’re getting a good night’s rest. Once you get used to the mental health benefits that come with having a tidy abode, it will be difficult to go back the other direction.
